Causes: Animal-Related, Animals

Mission: Safe Dogs By The River is a 501(c)(3) Non Profit, Mobile Canine Education and Holistic Rescue with priority emphasis on those most vulnerable in our community. Veteran, Senior, At Risk, BIPOC, LGBTQ & homeless communities are over represented among the vulnerable, and we work hard in hopes of easing suffering and enhancing quality of life for both animals and their people.

In rescue, simply “vetting” (spay/neuter, vaccinate, deworm) is not enough; simply housing them is not enough; we need to begin a brand new way of animal sheltering! We have been doing it differently for 2 decades now.

We take in a smaller number of animals, and we take the time to address every aspect of their well-being, from nutrition (what they eat affects everything) to emotional health (how they feel affects everything) to behavior & training (how we engage affects everything). Everything is connected, we cannot address only part of the picture. Warehousing animals is not working (not for people either) and research shows the extreme negative effects repeatedly, yet it does not change on the scale it must if we are to actually be “rescuing” these animals.

Adopting a dog should never be a nightmare, dangerous, require 1000s of hours or dollars to be safe and content! The rescues and shelters are supposed to be addressing all of that BEFORE placing any animal up for adoption. Our system is only doing part of the work, and in too many cases that part is part of the problem.

Our pledge:
*We will not alter the reproductive status of juvenile or baby animals, as we now know the risks associated with this practice and the benefits do not outweigh the risks. We will alter our adoptable animals upon adoption or under contract.

*Our pledge: We shall not place up for adoption animals that are a danger/threat to people or animals, regardless of the root cause. We will work to address the root cause whenever possible, and we will fight hard for the life of every animal.

*Our pledge: We will stay current on the latest scientific research, seminars, symposiums, conferences and lectures as we are able and are members of and/or support organizations that promote methods that do not cause pain or fear, or use intimidation, coercion, violence or similar methods. We have been working with dogs for 2 decades and had the honor of learning from some truly great minds in all things dog; as a result we utilize evidence and compassion based methods in all our training and behavior programs.

Results:
We have been helping people with their companions for over 20 years. We have an average 95% successful adoption placement, meaning the animals stay in the homes they were adopted into for their entire lives. We have had great success in helping people to keep their animals in the home when they have issues that might otherwise have brought their companion animal to the shelter system. We have helped many experiencing extreme poverty and/or homelessness to better care for their companions.

We offer no-low cost training, behavior and nutrition support for the companions of those experiencing extreme poverty and/or homelessness. Veterans, BIPOC, LGBTQ and homeless communities are prioritized for our support & services.

We offer community educational options such as What Is My Dog Saying presentations, working with local dog parks to increase safety, internships for those that wish to learn more.

We have historically taught canine behavior in veterinary technician classrooms, we hope to do more of this in the future.

We have taken in and safely placed so many animals in our 2 decades of service to the animals and community.

We are experienced in disaster response, certified in Animal First Aid and CPR and transport.

We have extensive veterinary experience, both holistic and conventional, and while we are not a vet, we do have one on our Board.

Target demographics: Animals and People in need.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 100 pets and their people

Geographic areas served: Mobile Organization - We Go Where Needs Are

Programs:

• We rescue animals but do not warehouse them. We see them as individuals with different needs. We limit the number of animals we take in so we can focus on each individual, addressing their needs prior to adoption, and avoid passing along “project dogs” to the community. Attention to diet, emotional health, behavior modification and basic training comprise our holistic approach.

• We are experienced in disaster response, long or short distance animal transport and we are certified in Animal First Aid & CPR. We have extensive veterinary experience, both holistic and conventional, and we have a veterinarian on our Board.

• We offer FREE educational classes using the latest scientific research to promote pain free and fear free methods, as well as community education options such as an informative and engaging PowerPoint presentation entitled “What Is My Dog Saying, ” explaining how to read dog body language, that we offer at various places where vulnerable dog owners may congregate.

• We have transitioned all of our home based programs to a mobile based system for the best possible outcomes for those in need; programs for training a fleet of mobile training & behavior units to go into the communities that need it most and a fleet of foster units to house at risk dogs while they undergo their transformation into canine good citizens. Our mobile system incorporates socialization to a whole new level and drastically increases positive outcomes of resilient and confident dogs that are wonderful additions to their communities.

• We have an average 95% successful adoption placement, meaning the animals stay in the homes they were adopted into for their entire lives. We have had great success in helping people to keep their animals in their homes when they have issues that might otherwise have brought their companion animals to the shelter system.
