Mission: Safe Passage/Camino Seguro transforms lives in the Guatemala City garbage dump community by providing students with an excellent education, a higher quality of life, and pathways to a job with dignity so they can achieve a better future for themselves and their families.

Target demographics: Youth and families living around the garbage dump in Guatemala City's Zones 3 and 7.Many of the families we serve migrated from rural, indigenous Maya communities in search of a better life and more opportunities.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Safe Passage serves 500 students, ranging in age from 4 to 21 years, from over 300 families for an overall total of 3,000 beneficiaries.

Geographic areas served: Guatemala City

Programs: Since 1999, Safe Passage has evolved into a comprehensive educational organization with a Pre-K through 9th grade full-day school that uses a holistic approach, which expands the definition of education. In our primary and middle school we have implemented the Expeditionary Learning model since 2015, which is a proven education style for at-risk populations that uses hands-on experiences in the classroom and real world. Despite the increased challenges from the global pandemic, we were proud to see an advancement rate from the 2020 to 2021 school years of nearly 100%. We also provide half-day educational support for high school students, tutoring, job and university placement support, adult education, and educational enrichment. When school is in session, all students get multiple healthy meals and snacks each day. During the pandemic, we have been filling this void with disbursements of food and hygiene supplies. In addition to academics, all students participate in enrichment activities such as visual arts, music, sports, English classes, library, and computer classes.
