Mission: Enriching Lives and Celebrating Nature in Southern Colorado

Results: In ten years we have increased the number and scope of almost all of our projects. Our fundraiser yard sale, which every year fills our entire 7,200-square-foot building with new donations by area donors, shows the dedication of our communities to the vision of a fuller life by being involved and caring. A quote by Margaret Mead tells the story: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. "

Target demographics: Everyone in our communities, infants to seniors.

Direct beneficiaries per year: An average of 50 families a month at our free Open Pantry; kids, with an Easter egg hunt; classroom help; warm clothes; a huge bag of gifts from Santa; and work toward completion of our community center. We help the environment with our recycling and cleanup projects, and continued work on our zero energy use building.

Geographic areas served: Pueblo, Huerfano, and Custer Counties in Southern Colorado. We are an all-volunteer nonprofit, founded ten years ago. Our energetic volunteers have kept our projects ongoing and successful!

Programs: We are renovating an old unusable building into a beautiful community center for the Greenhorn Valley in Southern Colorado. It will offer a huge variety of activities from concerts to cooking classes to bird-watching and nighttime star parties. We will have have engaging things to do and see for all ages, and be a trailhead for the planned Greenhorn Valley Trails System. It will be a demonstration building for responsible care of the environment, an almost zero energy use building. VFC 's other ongoing projects include a monthly free Open Pantry with food, clothing, and pet food; holiday gifts for 100 children with $40 spent on each child after talking with their parents about what the kids would like; an annual Easter egg hunt which brings about 150 kids; knitting hats and scarves for kids; free recycling of 1.5 to 2 tons of cardboard every month; highway cleanup; Greenhorn Valley Community Garden; classroom help in elementary schools; teaching kids to knit and crochet; and neighborhood street cleanup. We hold a locally famous indoor yard sale fundraiser every year which has included such diverse items as a Neverending swimming pool and an airplane fuselage! We just held our successful Second Annual Barn Dance.
