I received this book originally the year it was published, well over 20 years ago. With a few additions, it is basically the same as my first edition. I bought this one for my children, who are now taking their first ASL courses. I like how clear the illustrations are, but the reason I prefer this as a first lessons book to others on the market, is because of the hints to help remember signs, written below each description. It helps cement the new language into memory. GIRL signed like a bonnet string, for example. There are, perhaps, not enough Deaf Culture or Linguistic Theory notations in this book for a real die-hard, but for an entry-level student, it is easy to browse, organized well by topic, has a clear index table of contents, and serves a first year student well as a vocabulary reference dictionary.
