Causes: Education

Mission: Spokane HOPE changes the lives of children with hearing loss by teaching them to listen and talk so they can succeed in our hearing world.

Results: Our alumni students' success is our greatest achievement. We see evidence of their success in multiple ways. We see our alumni students out in the community thriving in their academic mainstream programs, fully engaged and participating in extracurricular activities alongside their hearing peers, filled with confidence in themselves and their hearing loss, and advocating for their needs to succeed in challenging environments, crowded classrooms, playgrounds, and assemblies. We see that they are proud to say "I wear hearing aids (or a cochlear implant), " and they educate others on hearing loss so they can take the elephant out of the room and be "Billy" rather than "the kid with the hearing aids. " The result of HOPE's specialized early intervention services is continuously succeeding in preparing children with hearing loss to graduate from high school, seek higher education, and get the jobs that will allow them to live the same quality of life as a person without hearing loss. .

Target demographics: local deaf and hard of hearing children to listen and talk

Direct beneficiaries per year: 56 children through our programs beginning at initial diagnosis of hearing loss and provided resources to 122 parents/caregivers.

Geographic areas served: Spokane and outlying counties, including Northern Idaho

Programs: our Early Intervention Program for children with hearing loss from Birth-3 years provided in-home services by our veteran Teacher of the Deaf. We also provide a weeklyToddler group for children 12 mos-3 yrs and two half-day preschool classes four days a week. Spokane HOPE is the region’s only listening and spoken language preschool for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. We serve local toddlers and preschoolers (ages 1-5) who are fitted with modern hearing aids or cochlear implants. During these early years, children have the greatest potential to maximize their listening skills, acquire oral language and achieve normal cognitive development. HOPE School provides the necessary early intervention services during this critical brain development window and prepares students for a smooth and seamless transition into their neighborhood schools.
