I have a number of "cold blast" hurricane style lanterns. I got these since I didn't want my Feuerhand or WR Kirkman lanterns to get rusty in the tropical environment outside and these are certainly inexpensive. They have 5/8" wicks and are decently made. The glass is thin but arrived intact in Puerto Rico. The metal is thin. However, they just don't burn right. What would be a nice normal sized flame with no soot in a Feuerhand or Kirkman Champion lantern makes the wick burn down on these. There is science behind the proven models, which were and are state-of-the art for portable kerosene lamps. I think the airflow is just off and it was not designed based on any actual studies in airflow. It is also seriously affected by breeze. Spend a little more and get a Kirkman, Dietz, or Feuerhand. You'll be rewarded with a nice white flame, no soot when adjusted properly, and no wick burning. I especially like the Kirkman lanterns, Champion and Little Champ-- they are based on proven Dietz designs and have nice THICK glass and many options in glass color. I once again learned the lesson, "buy cheap, buy twice."
