Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: To provide free medical care and related services to pets of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness using a One Health approach to street medicine.

Results: In May of 2015, the first Street Dog Coalition clinic took place in Fort Collins, Colorado across from the Sister Alice Murphy Center for Hope with a team of five veterinarians, four veterinary technicians, three veterinary students and several dedicated volunteers. It has since expanded to cities across the U. S. and the growth continues. In 2020, we were able to serve nearly 1,500 pets and in turn, their humans. By caring for the pet, we know we are also taking care of the person on the other end of the leash.

Target demographics: pets and people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness

Direct beneficiaries per year: 1500 dogs

Geographic areas served: Over 50 cities across the country

Programs: setting up pop-up veterinary clinics. to provide free veterinary care. This care includes (and is not limited to): vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention, treatment of minor wounds and infections, pain management, prescriptions and other medical services at no charge. We provide pet food and pet supplies when they are donated, and we also attend events such as Homeless Connect and Veterans Stand Downs. We set up street clinics where they are needed and are able to serve a population who would normally never be able to afford or have access to affordable care for their animals. In addition to providing onsite veterinary care, free vouchers for spay/neuter services at a partnering veterinary clinic are also provided as needed.
