Mission: Stroud™ Water Research Center advances knowledge and stewardship of freshwater systems through global scientific research, environmental education, and watershed restoration. No other institution explores the intricate functioning of these finite freshwater resources and how to protect them like we do — across years, sometimes decades, of changes to our environment. Our groundbreaking work leads to a deeper understanding of the streams, rivers, and watersheds that sustain communities and ecosystems around the world.

Results: Understanding what makes streams and rivers healthy is key to ensuring the availability of clean and safe fresh water now and for the future. For more than 50 years, Stroud Water Research Center scientists have pioneered freshwater research. We apply our unique, interdisciplinary approach to the critical questions that affect water quality and availability around the world. From the River Continuum Concept to the Thermal Equilibrium Concept, our early ideas have shaped decades of advancement in freshwater science. Our unbiased, nonadvocacy research influences decisions at the highest levels of local, state, federal, and international environmental management. Each year, our educators and watershed restoration specialists reach thousands of people and organizations around the globe with knowledge, tools, and resources to make informed decisions that help protect our planet’s most precious natural resource, fresh water.

Target demographics: Businesses, government policymakers, landowners, nonprofits, students, teachers, underserved populations, and individuals of all ages.

Geographic areas served: United States, Global
