This was the first sweater vest I bought for my 20 year old, 5-11, 170 son. He has been working out and has morphed from a solid medium into a large, so I bought this vest as a large, thinking it was a good move since he'd be wearing a dress shirt under it. It ended up being a little wide in the shoulders and a little long - but he still loves it. He washed it before wearing to see if it would shrink up a bit, and it did shrink a little in length, but is still a little long on him. I bought the navy vest and I'm thinking about getting him the charcoal. If I do, I"ll get the medium next time.
