Causes: Health, Specialty Hospitals

Mission: Our mission to reduce the burden of heart disease in Rwanda is focused on rheumatic heart disease, a preventable disease of poverty and childhood, caused by untreated strep throat. Since 2008 we have provided life saving surgical care, prevention and awareness programs and mentoring local staff. Since 2014 a Memorandum of understanding signed with the Ministry of Health of Rwanda to build a state of art Cardiac Center in Rwanda to increase access to specialized comprehensive care to meet the needs of the country for all heart disease, pediatric and adult.

Results: Over 205 patients have been provided life-saving cardiac surgical care, with less than 5% operative mortality with follow up annually in 98% of survivors. An advocacy patient-led group, supports common concerns and facilitates transportation for those who need assistance for follow up. In 2011, Team Heart led a school-age screening in 3000 children to determine prevalence in RHD in an area near Kigali. In addition, over 70 patients are screened by Team Heart each year for pre-op evaluation for a total of 700 screened to date. In 2014, a team of US-led cardiac sonographers participated in the first-ever "train the trainers" program in the first stage of NCD nurse-led programs. A young surgeon completed training in South Africa for specialized cardiac training. We work in partnership with the University of Rwanda and the Rwandan Ministry of Health to determine the human resource needs of the nation in both nursing and medicine.
