Mission: Teen Lifeline was established in 1986 to impact the devastating problem of teen suicide. Its mission is to prevent teen suicide in Arizona by enhancing resiliency in youth and fostering supportive communities.

Results: In 2020, Teens Lifeline received more than 35,000 calls and texts to the crisis hotline, continuing the trend of double-digit increase from year to year. Clearly, peer counseling continues to be a critical tool for struggling youth in Arizona. Our Community Education and Prevention programs reached over 320,000 people in 2020, both virtually and in-person. These programs provide awareness, education, and prevention to students, educators, parents, and community members. Topics covered include teen suicide, anxiety and depression, and grief. We provided services in 213 schools, 37 community and youth-based organizations, 5 business, and 11 conferences. In 2020, through our Life Skills Development program more than 80 teens volunteered over 19,400 hours. All Teen Lifeline Peer Counselors complete the Life Skills Development Program before they can answer any calls. In 2003, Teen Lifeline was the first peer counseling hotline to receive the Crisis Intervention Program Certification through the American Association of Suicidology. That Certification has been renewed continuously since 2003, One of the AAS's core values is the right of every citizen to necessary assistance in life-threatening or other crises. This value reflects the basic philosophy that an active intervention must be done in life-threatening situations. AAS certification assures the community that Teen Lifeline's services adhere to current, nationally recognized best practices standards of care and training and that Teen Lifeline maintains a commitment to quality improvement.

Geographic areas served: State of Arizona

Programs: The cornerstone of Teen Lifeline is its Peer Counseling Hotline which provides troubled youth throughout Arizona the opportunity to access immediate help from a Peer Counselor 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Teen Lifeline is the only Peer Counseling Hotline in Arizona and one of only 6 nationwide. In 2020, Teen Lifeline received nearly 35,000 calls and texts for help from youth ranging in age from 8 to 22.Calls are answered by Peer Counselors who receive a minimum of 72 hours of training and are supervised at all times by a master's level behavioral health clinician. The training and staff support allow these volunteers to confidently help other teens resolve problems ranging from school problems, relationship issues, dating violence, abuse, depression, and suicide. The free, confidential hotline, which is available to address any issues that a teen may be facing, helps prevent unresolved problems from leading youth to consider suicide as an option. The Peer Volunteers learn skills such as communication, listening, problem-solving, leadership, and the value of community service that of life-long use. Our Community Outreach and Education programs include classroom workshops teaching teens how to deal with suicide and depression, grief and loss, stress and coping, and bullying. We also provide training for educators, parents, and community members on how to respond when they believe a teen is suicidal. Most workshops are free of charge. Our education program includes our Student ID Initiative, where schools include Teen Lifeline's message of hope and phone number on the back of student IDs.
