Mission:
The Hartford Community Center (HCC) is a non-profit organization that provides safety net and supportive services, which includes basic workforce, educational, cultural, and social supports to its immediate neighborhood and surrounding community. Current programs include year round youth-development, adult basic skills and job-readiness, computer literacy and language classes (ESOL, Conversational Spanish), and food and nutrition education for children and families. Still located in Hartford’s West End, the community center was established in 2002 as a central meeting space within its neighborhood for community activity to take place.
HCC has recognized, through its recent transition, that the growing needs of people in Hartford are boundless. The Center''s new approach to addressing community service issues and challenges that transcend geographic lines has required a fresh vision and approach to engage existing work. HCC works with a service population and environment that is increasingly transient, unstable, and complex.
Over the past two years, the community center has targeted services that meet basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing-related advocacy and referrals. Recent activities have included clothing and winter coat drives for needy residents, Thanksgiving meals and turkey distribution, and our annual Christmas Toys for Tots outreach partnership. The Center now offers the Supplemental Nutritional Educational Program (SNAP), formerly the food stamp program, to neighborhood residents (a partnership with DSS and Foodshare); emergency food assistance for local residents; summer meals including breakfast and lunch; and has met increases in food served in year-round youth programming. We have seen these programs grow by at least%75 over the past year.
Programs: The Community Workforce and Technology Programs provide workforce development, educational and technology skills training to 400 low income adults, who are experiencing acute barriers to employment. These barriers include transportation, stable housing, language proficiency, basic skills and professional workforce competency skill attainment.
