I tried sanding the handle because it was a tight fit and gave up the hickory is way too hard. So I got my little sledge hammer out and poundd the handle all the wau to the other end of the head pefect! It was a hard perfet fit in the end and I also poumded home the metal wedge. No way is that handle ever coming off.

I'm a diesel tech. Sometimes I need a big hammer with a short handle. This is a nice little handle for an eight pound head. I don't like varnished handles, I don't understand why ppl do this. Please stop wasting varnish. I'll sand it and apply boiled linseed oil upon hanging the head.
