Step drills are a convenient way to drill through thin material. I used this set today to drill through 1/4, 1/2 ply, some 16ga aluminum, and some 2” PVC pipe. They all worked well on the aluminum and plastic. On the plywood, the four smallest bits penetrated easily, but all but the smallest (the one with the least number of steps) had substantial tear-out on the back side. Obviously, when the thickness of the wood exceeded the step size, the hole also has an inside stepif you need to drill anything deep, you're better off using a ordinary twist drill.Long story shortThese are great to punch a hole in thin material. They're pretty much the opposite of a precision drill, but for a quick and dirty hole, they're very handy.
