Causes: Eye Diseases, Blindness & Vision Impairments, Health

Mission: Our mission is to promote the dignity and empowerment of people in Wisconsin who are blind and visually impaired by providing services, advocating legislation, and educating the general public. The Council helps individuals with vision loss lead full, productive, engaged and independent lives. We offer vision services, including one-on-one low vision evaluations, vision rehabilitation training, orientation and mobility training, access technology training, free white canes, resources and information about low vision support groups. The Council’s Sharper Vision Store features more than 400 adaptive products that make everyday tasks easier and safer. Legislative advocacy has led to laws that protect service dogs and their owners and provide educational materials in accessible formats for post-secondary students.

Geographic areas served: The Council serves people throughout Wisconsin who live with vision loss

Programs: free white canes, access technology classes, in-home vision rehabilitation visits, low vision evaluations, magnifiers and a variety of adaptive products. Council staff lead educational sessions for people who are learning to live with vision loss, their families and for eye care professionals. We promote continuing education by providing scholarships for post secondary education. Our advocacy efforts revolve around pedestrian safety, transportation, voting rights, health care and employment.
