The other TruArc series may be more compact or the higher series more beefy but this one gives the perfect balance. Not the cheapest made, but not too much in one. Global needle and added magnet to assist in resisting EMI. It responds fast, good for orienteering either the sport or the hiking past time. Awesome to have in a ditchbag.

The Brunton TruArc 10 is somewhat frustrating. On one hand, it is capable of astounding accuracy but I am convinced that whoever designed certain aspects of this compass never actually had to use it. To properly function as a baseplate compass, the housing should be clear, with red lines on the lower surface to match up with north-south map grid lines as the housing is rotated to obtain a bearing from the map. The bottom of the compass housing is covered with a white decal and the only orienting lines are on the numbered portion of the compass dial. This makes adjusting for accuracy extremely slow. The worst feature is the means of adjusting for declination. I spent nearly 45 minutes trying to make this adjustment and had to settle for half a degree off because that was the closest I could get. Whoever designed this means of adjusting for declination should have their head examined. This compass really needs adjustable declination that is gear driven. The compass needle functions flawlessly and the 1 to 24,000 roamer was found to be accurate and easy to use. The one degree bearing resolution is excellent for a compass of this size. One feature that a good baseplate compass should have is a magnifier built in to help read contour lines off a topo map. The TruArc 10 lacks this feature although there is a small magnifying bubble to help read the bearing. It is also a bit frustrating having only one straight edge for getting bearings from a topo map, only the right side is straight. This could have been an excellent compass if a little more thought had gone into it's design.

simple, lightweight, and does exactly as it advertises. make sure your orietnation skills surpass what this simple device offers...that is, if you're not already good with map and compass, this isn't for you

Not as well built as i expected. The sticker backing was off center and looked prone to peeling off. Traded it for a military compass...

Really nice compass. Came as shown except the numbers of the bearings are black or paper, not blue on clear plastic.
