I bought this because my husband works nights and my biggest fear is I'll be stuck in my room at night with our 11 month old baby during a house fire. I feel so much safer having this in the closet and the instructions are very easy. Just wish it was a little bit earlier to store, it's a bit awkward.

We just built a 2 story house and this was one of our first purchases after moving in. It was a great value and gives me peace of mind for my children's safety should there be a fire.

Unfortunately we can't really test this product as it says it's one use. You can only use once. We would need to have a fire before we could test it. But on inspection everything looks alright and it seems well made. It's worth having piece of mind knowing we can get out of our 2nd story bedrooms in case of fire.

It twists around a lot. I think it should be a little easier to use since it's an item that would have to be used in an emergency.

Hope to never have opportunity to use this product but there is confidence that it will work as advertised if needed. Decent price compact in storage looks like it will be easy to deploy in a rush.

I do wish it wasn't one-time use. I would have liked to be able to take it out of packaging, open it up to experience how it works. Would hate to try to figure it out on the fly in an emergency situation. And to see what window would be best to use it out of, etc. But hopefully I never have to worry about using it at all.

I said it that way in the headline because they tell you not to test it, because you'll never get it folded back up right, and they can't guarantee it will deploy properly after that. But it seems sturdy, deploys easily, and looks like it will simply extend to the ground when you pull the little Velcro tab.

I've heard great things about this. Unfortunately though, it doesn't fit my townhouse windows with a brick ledge. I guess we'll just have to jump in case of a fire

We own a multi-story home in the mountains. California wildfires have been more frequent, larger, and more devastating in the past, few years due to our extreme drought conditions and high winds (among other factors). We were concerned that our children might be stuck on the top floors with no way to escape if the stairs were engulfed in flames. The only way out: through the windows two or three stories high. These escape ladders would solve that problem for them: take them out of the box, attach to the window rim, unlock the steps, and climb down. We did a couple test runs and coached them to ALWAYS have 3 points of contacts on the ladder: meaning, there are 2 hands and 2 feet -- always keep 3 of those limbs on the ladder while moving. Learned this trick from ice climbing.WARNING: Packaging says the ladder can ONLY BE USED ONE TIME. After that, Kidde considers the integrity of the ladders as compromised. Should you practice? Heck yes. Can you practice? If you're a teenager or heavier, I would advise against it -- practice with ANOTHER unit instead (yes, it'll cost you money, but it's best everyone knows how to use the ladder in an emergency instead of at that very moment). I had my little kids practice under supervision. I also inspected the ladder afterwards before putting it back away.

Super handy to have in any household that's 2 stories or above. Only rated for a single use but i suspect it can be used multiple times. Always better to be prepared!

I have wanted an emergency ladder for awhile now. Just recently replaced original 1945 windows that had decades of paint layers and would not open. Bought fire extinguishers for the three upstairs areas, but now, since my windows open, wanted another 'layer' of protection. I like these. Bought two. One came in a box, the other did not, only a plastic bag. It isn't super light, but I can handle it (68YO woman) It does have pretty sharp areas of metal. I haven't actually put it in my window, (probably should do that to make sure it works.....) But at least there is a safer way out than jumping!
