A coin probably would tell you if you need new tires, but this tells you approximately how much longer your tires will last. I used it before a long driving trip to make sure I wouldn't run my tires bald before I got back. Was confident in the measurement and it worked out great.

This tire tread gauge is surprisingly well-built and works as expected. Its easy to use and the color codes make reading the results easy as well. I particularly appreciate the carrying bag it comes with, which will help preserve/protect the glass. I would recommend this gauge.

Comes in handy. I use it before I take our cars to maintenance. It matches the Service results. I also check on occasion to determine if its time to buy tires.

This didn't come with instructions, but then I realized it was pretty obvious. You push the wider pin on top until the gauge reads zero. Then the thinner pin on the bottom is sticking out pretty far. You just place that thinner bar in the groove of the tire and push down until the flat part of the gauge hits the tire tread. Easy peasy. I found out my tires were still in the green so good for another winter season. This way if the tire place tries to tell me they are no good, I'll know they are scamming me. There is no battery or anything to go wrong on this, it is just a mechanical gauge that seems sturdy.

Pretty basic, but works well. Very easy to read. I am very happy with this. Some people mentioned that it would be nice if it had a protective pouch. It does, but you have to look carefully to find it.

Been using it for Six months with no problem. High quality, easy to read, smooth operation with normal drag. My coworker has a Snap-on one and I think it is the same. Both are made in China.

I purchased 5 of these for my used car department, work much better and easier to use than the stick version.
