Purchased this for my 6 year old step son and easily taught him the game in just one night. Great for him to take back and forth to moms house. Only thing is we have already lost a piece :( Is there a way to order an extra set? Would be useful especially when pieces graduate. Yes, downside is that the checkers pieces are not magnetic but we also have a couple extra boards for that game. All in all, perfect little travel set!

It made all from plastic. Very light. Magnets are well balance with the board. Peaces are right size to the board.

I love that the board/pieces is/are magnetic, all the pieces fit back into the case after play. It's a great product and a wonderful price. It would be good and easy for packing if you go on a vacation. It's been a long time since I've played Chess, and I was very happy to finally be able to play again. Worth it!

My son loves this set!! Its convenient because all the pieces can be stored away its also very helpful that the pieces are magnetic (we have small dogs that like to walk over the board of we are on the ground) and it's great for travel!!!

Using it to teach my son chess and now my dog won't knock the pieces off as easily.

My partner reads chess books but often runs out of time before he falls asleep. This is great because he can leave everything as is without the cat knocking it over on the chess table. He learns chess strategies in bed, puts the game on his night table and can resume at any time.

My perception of the quality for a chess set is driven by a variety of things including the size, weight and detail shown on the pieces, the fit and finish of the board, the sense of robust stability when moving pieces and their ability to stay put when placed. Sure, there are many other characteristics that might impart a sense of quality, but the above are the most important ones to me. This set far exceeded the expectations I had for a $27 chess set. The pieces are plastic yet they are perfectly formed and have exceptional detail - certainly better than wood pieces I have seen at higher prices. For example I can see the eye lids and teeth of the Knights in this set. The Queen's crown is beautifully formed and all the pieces are free of rough edges or flashing from the manufacturing process. Their magnetic stickiness enhances the sense of robust construction as they are picked up and placed. All the pieces with their magnetic/felt bases land with a sort of clunk. So it not only looks good, it feels good.Like many travel sets, the board folds on hinges and also acts as a carrying case and the Rank and File markings are clearly imprinted on all four edges of the board for easy reference. The board is made of metal mounted to a plastic base (of surprisingly strong design) and the playing surface is either painted with wood tone squares or overlaid with a thin veneer (I can't tell which). However the dark squares are made to imitate a subtle burl grain and the light squares look like maple wood. It really is surprisingly impressive. As with most folding boards there is a gap between ranks 4 and 5 but it is unavoidable on any folding board yet this gam is very minor and the pieces do slide over it with no problem. Very well made. The plastic base perpetuates the feeling of quality as it is solidly constructed of thick plastic, the hinges are perfectly set and the entire affair lays perfectly flat and stable. I must say, I am very impressed with a chess set of this quality at this price point. My only suggestion to the maker is to include a better means of stowing the pieces inside the board when it is folded. Other sets have pads permanently set into the underside of the board with cut-out spaces that are shaped for each piece and into which the pieces can be firmly inserted. As it is, these pieces rattle around in the case when closed unless the user finds an alternative way to stow them. I am using two sandwich bags (one for white and one for the black pieces). It works but not nearly as elegant as the recommended solution. This stowing thing is a very minor point that does NOT detract from the really important aspects of how I assess the quality of this set. Highly recommended. Update. See pictures: I added a 12-1/4 square wood base and a lazy susan which simplifies spinning the board and seeing the field from various points of view when such things as trying various positions for self study. It now spins easily on the lazy susan and the wood base (1/8 plywood) ensures the board remains flat the entire time.

For me, this set is darned near perfect. I have bought several sets of about this size but this is now my go-to chess set. The magnetic attraction of the pieces and board are just right, definitely not too weak. The size of the board is the same as the (non-magnetic) vinyl roll-up board; most magnetic sets have a smaller board. The pieces are well designed; the bishops are will not be confused either with pawns or bishops (another common failing of sets this size). I'm not sure why these are called wooden, but they are not wood...and that turns out to be a good thing because the features are more crisp than on wood pieces in this price range. Did I mention the colors? They are also excellent and about the same as on the tournament-size sets one sees Masters using on YouTube. I am delighted with this purchase and count myself lucky to own this set. Nothing is perfect though, but the only downside I can think of is that having two extra queens would surely have been a nice touch.
